Mobile Cloud Summit Live

On 21st September we held our first Mobile Cloud Summit event. Now we’re planning a series of 2-hour live streamed events for 2012 under the Mobile Cloud Summit umbrella. These events will be internationally broadcast, live web-streamed thought leadership events involving subject matter experts.  Each event will focus on a single sub-theme – such as Mobile Cloud Security, M2M or Social Enterprise.  Over the course of 2012 we’d like to run several events – thereby building a substantial knowledge resource, in conjunction with our sponsors, on www.mobilecloudsummit.com

Each live-streamed event offers an exclusive sponsorship opportunity to just one corporate sponsor that would like to be associated with events that will stream to an international, pre-registered audience.

If you would like to sponsor you might want to watch these little videos. If you’re interested please contact us and we can tell you a bit more about the sponsorship opportunity.

Investigating the Past

The Historical Enquiries Team (HET) is unique in policing and its work is unprecedented. It is a special investigative unit attached to  the Police Service of Northern Ireland.  It was established to re-examine the deaths of thousands of people in the civil unrest in Northern Ireland between 1968 and the signing of the Belfast Agreement in April 1998. It is an independent unit which answers directly to the Chief Constable. The scope and scale of its work is exceptional with more than 2,500 cases spanning three decades.

The HET approached us in 2009 and asked if we might be able to conduct research with families who had lost loved ones during those three decades – and whose murders had been re-examined by the HET.  We were selected over other firms because of our ability to conduct highly demanding research work, the maturity and sensitivity of our fieldwork partners, and our technology platforms that allowed us to adopt highly secure processes for sample handling and data management.

On completion of the third wave of research, Jeffrey Peel, Managing Director of Quadriga Consulting, said that the survey indicated that the overwhelming number of families surveyed had derived some benefit from the HET’s investigations.

“This is the third year that we have conducted family-satisfaction research for the HET.  This year, we interviewed many more family representatives – 190 this year compared to 143 last year and 116 in 2009. Satisfaction with the HET has been high in previous years, but this year we saw marked improvements. Over 90% of family members – across all community groups – indicated that they were ‘satisfied’, or ‘very satisfied’ with the HET.

“We also noted a significant increase in satisfaction with the quality of the reports provided to families. The feedback from families is that most derive benefit from the HET’s work.”

Headed by David Cox, formerly of the London Metropolitan Police, the HET consists of a team of 100 investigators and supporting staff, and a budget of £30 million.  Mr Cox commented about the 3rd wave of survey findings:

“I am very pleased with the results. Sometimes, we are the first contact about a fatality that a family has had in 40 years and I am particularly pleased that the survey found we have acted professionally and with sensitivity.

“Families need answers now and our remit is to try to answer their questions as fully as possible. It is not the case that we lack external oversight; we are answerable to the Chief Constable and the Policing Board and to the relatives of the victims and they are of paramount importance.”

Jeff Peel’s Opening Address: Mobile Cloud Summit

In this video Jeffrey Peel, Managing Consultant at Quadriga Consulting, provides an overview of the Mobile Cloud market – and argues that the mobile cloud is transformational at a series of different levels.

He argues that ubiquitous access, combined with the rapid consumption of apps, is changing user perceptions of computing.  He also talks about the economic transformation of less developed economies by mobile technology.

In addition, Jeff illustrates how businesses need to embrace the ‘context richness’ of the interactive mobile cloud to offer new types of services to consumers.

This was the opening address at the first Mobile Cloud Summit in London’s Tech City.

In the second part of the video Jeff chats with Chris Moore of UK Trade & Investment and Chris Horn ofMovirtu.

Taylor Wessing Gold Sponsor of Mobile Cloud Summit

Taylor Wessing, the international law firm, has become a gold sponsor of Mobile Cloud Summit – due to be held on September 21 in London.  The event is being organised by Quadriga Consulting.

According to Jeff Peel, MD of Quadriga Consulting, “Taylor Wessing operates across international markets and is very focused, in London, on the Tech City initiative – that has been so successful in attracting in so many innovative start-ups into London.  It’s also a key reason why we have moved our London event to this area.”

IBM is 100

2011 is IBM’s centenary year and it has compiled a fabulous little film to highlight some of the company’s achievements and many more to come.  Do we all have IBM stories to tell?  Jeff Peel (not quite 100 yet) ponders…

I have worked in the technology industry for pretty much my entire adult life. I have never been employed by IBM but I suppose I consider myself something of an IBMer. I’ve undertaken countless research and thought leadership projects for the company. IBM has been good to me.

But here are a few of my own IBM landmarks.

  • The first programming language I was ever taught was FORTRAN (launched by IBM in 1957 – well before I was born) – I was terrible FORTRAN programmer
  • The first laptop I ever used was a ThinkPad – and I later conducted several user and channel related research projects for IBM RTP on this segment defining product
  • I once sat in CEO Lou Gerstner’s office chair (when strolling past his office on a trip to IBM’s Armonk HQ) – Gerstner was appointed CEO in 1993
  • I conducted user research on the RS/6000 products in the late 1990s (RS/6000s were powered by IBM’s RISC chips, first announced in 1980)
  • I started my career in market research and once worked for one of America’s oldest and most respected research firms, Roper Starch.  But the fact is that large sample survey research was only made possible because of IBM – with the arrival of punch-cards in 1931.

Anyone who works in technology – or in business – has a personal IBM story to tell. But all I wanted to say was, “Congratulations IBM”.

Background

There are a number of interlocking factors driving mobile cloud computing. Firstly, adoption of smart mobile devices has been dramatic with tablet/pad device adoption ramping up at a frantic pace. Apple iPad shipment growth has been stellar and app downloads now dwarf downloads of music from the iTunes store.

But rapid device shipment growth is not just restricted to Apple.  Android powered device shipment growth is equally dramatic and availability of Android apps has resulted in head-to-head device wars between a host of manufacturers vying for market dominance. The result is that the pre-eminence of the PC is waning – more smartphones and tablets are now shipping than PCs.

Second, adoption of mobility is now a global phenomenon – with mobile phones offering internet access to hundreds of millions of people in emerging economies.  3G subscriber growth is now around 35% – with over 700 million subscribers already connected.  With ever-cheaper smartphones becoming available more and more people – previously denied access to the internet – will become connected.

Profound Impact

With mobile internet-connected devices becoming globally pervasive the effects on business and society will be profound. Consumers will, increasingly, buy goods and services via mobile devices – as well as communicate and network via social media applications in the mobile cloud. Mobile search and advertising will explode. Employees will demand the availability of business applications via connected devices. Consumer gadgets will increasingly invade the corporate space – resulting in security concerns, as well as systems challenges. And devices will become embedded – resulting in an explosion of new ‘sensor-based’ cloud technologies and solutions.

Thought Leader Perspectives

The Mobile Cloud Summit will feature speakers that will give a series of thought leader perspectives on mobility, mobile data and the mobile cloud. They will help articulate the impact on business of mobile cloud technologies – equipping delegates with the latest thinking relating to mobile cloud technology and its impact on business and society.
