On the 22nd of October, Quadriga Consulting – in conjunction with Switch New Media – held the first Government 2010 live streamed event from London.  While we had just around 80 invited guests and speakers in the room, the event was watched by over 1,100 people worldwide – from 29 countries and 129 cities.

The event generated over 75 pages of tweets using the event’s #g2010 hash tag – indeed #g2010 was a UK trending topic on Twitter on the day of the event.

Speakers included Peter Kellner of YouGov; Adam Afriyie MP, Shadow Minister for Science and Innovation; William Heath, founder of Kable; and Tom Steinberg of MySociety.org

Government 2010 has only just started – we’re already hatching plans for next year.  Watch this space.  Oh and you may wish to watch Peter Kellner’s keynote address while you’re here.  The rest of the presentations and panel sessions can be found here.

Quadriga Quizzes Chancellor

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

By Jeffrey Peel – At the CBI Conference in London a couple of weeks ago, I got the opportunity to ask the Chancellor about his plans to introduce lower corporation tax rates in the regions.

This is a subject that interests me, of course, because I pay corporation tax and my business is based in a region with vast public sector dependency and a relatively stunted commercial sector.  It always seems to be a particularly nasty tax to business-people.  After all, we take risk, set up our own businesses with our own money, pay income tax on our earnings, and then have to pay tax on any profit we make.  In this respect it really works against enterprise and risk-taking.  It also stifles investment.

Anyway, the question I asked is one that will interest business people in the so-called “less advantaged” UK regions such as Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Alastair Darling MPI asked if Mr Darling had any plans to introduce a lower, preferential, rate for these regions.  He said no…in a politician’s usual, roundabout, way.  As for Northern Ireland, he made clear that the issue of tax was being considered by Sir David Varney – and we’re all awaiting his report (if not with bated breath).

However, the Chancellor’s answer was laden with negativity – he hinted heavily that a special corporation tax rate for NI would work against other UK regions and would be very tricky to administer.

I tend to agree – despite the fact Northern Ireland shares a land border with a country with a much lower CT rate.

The answer begs another question though…which is when will corporation tax in the UK be reduced to the same level as RoI?  Because that, rather than fiddling with regional CT rates, is what we need – right across the whole of the UK.

Quadriga Consulting, the ICT sector market analysis and consulting firm, today announced the launch of a major new research project designed to paint a much clearer picture of the current status of transformational change in local government.

Manchester City Hall

The role of technology as an enabler in delivering effective and efficient services, information sharing and the take up of public services is a common theme in the context of ‘transformational government’.  The research assignment will be designed to focus on how local authorities are going about implementing a transformational strategy.

  • The survey will focus on the following key topics:
  • The emergence of national standards on service delivery and citizen satisfaction monitoring
  • The need for the evolution of public services in a digital world where most commercial services are customer-centric: how citizen-centricity can be achieved
  • Designing services to meet the rising expectations of local consumers of services
  • How technology can become a more important tool to assist authorities to focus on their core competencies
  • How technology saves money in processes and administration, and provides flexibility in delivering services and enhancing public perceptions
  • How authorities are achieving joined-up service delivery and maintaining accurate records and audit trails
  • How authorities are achieving information-sharing to deliver citizen centric services and facilitate better transactional processes

According to Jeffrey Peel, Quadriga Consulting’s CEO, “There is a growing need for local authorities to develop better ICT resources that will enable partnership at all levels and departments, suppliers and with the voluntary sector.  In addition there is the growing need for authorities to co-operate and develop shared services models.  The survey will allow us to build a better picture of current state of play in local government.  Every UK authority will be invited to participate and we are actively seeking the involvement of the ICT vendor community to help define the scope of the study.  Findings will be shared with participants and the vendor community.”
