IBM is 100

2011 is IBM’s centenary year and it has compiled a fabulous little film to highlight some of the company’s achievements and many more to come.  Do we all have IBM stories to tell?  Jeff Peel (not quite 100 yet) ponders…

I have worked in the technology industry for pretty much my entire adult life. I have never been employed by IBM but I suppose I consider myself something of an IBMer. I’ve undertaken countless research and thought leadership projects for the company. IBM has been good to me.

But here are a few of my own IBM landmarks.

  • The first programming language I was ever taught was FORTRAN (launched by IBM in 1957 – well before I was born) – I was terrible FORTRAN programmer
  • The first laptop I ever used was a ThinkPad – and I later conducted several user and channel related research projects for IBM RTP on this segment defining product
  • I once sat in CEO Lou Gerstner’s office chair (when strolling past his office on a trip to IBM’s Armonk HQ) – Gerstner was appointed CEO in 1993
  • I conducted user research on the RS/6000 products in the late 1990s (RS/6000s were powered by IBM’s RISC chips, first announced in 1980)
  • I started my career in market research and once worked for one of America’s oldest and most respected research firms, Roper Starch.  But the fact is that large sample survey research was only made possible because of IBM – with the arrival of punch-cards in 1931.

Anyone who works in technology – or in business – has a personal IBM story to tell. But all I wanted to say was, “Congratulations IBM”.

Background

There are a number of interlocking factors driving mobile cloud computing. Firstly, adoption of smart mobile devices has been dramatic with tablet/pad device adoption ramping up at a frantic pace. Apple iPad shipment growth has been stellar and app downloads now dwarf downloads of music from the iTunes store.

But rapid device shipment growth is not just restricted to Apple.  Android powered device shipment growth is equally dramatic and availability of Android apps has resulted in head-to-head device wars between a host of manufacturers vying for market dominance. The result is that the pre-eminence of the PC is waning – more smartphones and tablets are now shipping than PCs.

Second, adoption of mobility is now a global phenomenon – with mobile phones offering internet access to hundreds of millions of people in emerging economies.  3G subscriber growth is now around 35% – with over 700 million subscribers already connected.  With ever-cheaper smartphones becoming available more and more people – previously denied access to the internet – will become connected.

Profound Impact

With mobile internet-connected devices becoming globally pervasive the effects on business and society will be profound. Consumers will, increasingly, buy goods and services via mobile devices – as well as communicate and network via social media applications in the mobile cloud. Mobile search and advertising will explode. Employees will demand the availability of business applications via connected devices. Consumer gadgets will increasingly invade the corporate space – resulting in security concerns, as well as systems challenges. And devices will become embedded – resulting in an explosion of new ‘sensor-based’ cloud technologies and solutions.

Quadriga Consulting is working with SLA Mobile, the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Winner, to build a new social media optimised communications hub.

SLA Mobile is a fast growing technology company and needs a more flexible means of getting its messages out to the mobile developer, blogger and media community.  Quadriga is working with the company to build an interactive blog – www.slamobileblog.com – with links to other social media ‘assets’ such as Twitter.

Content will build over time but the blog site will be a key focal point for product information, technical discussions, and multimedia content in the lead-up to the mobile industry’s major trade show – Mobile World Congress – in Barcelona next February.

Harry Metcalfe will be chairing a discussion on how web 2.0 technologies are transforming the process of public consultation with citizens.  We’ll be announcing his panel members shortly.

Harry is the founder of The Dextrous Web, a startup founded to help organisations – mostly in the public sector – get things right on the web. The Dextrous Web’s clients include The Cabinet Office, The Central Office of Information, The Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills and Guardian News & Media.

 Harry is also on the boards of the Open Rights Group, an NGO which campaigns to protect and preserve our digital rights, and the FreeLegalWeb, a community interest company with plans to make the law easier to find, read and understand.

 He is particularly interested in making public sector information discoverable and resuable, reforming copyright law, making the public consultation process more transparent and accountable and strengthening the Freedom of Information Act.

Web 2.0 Overview

It was a real pleasure to spend the last two weeks in the Bay Area (any excuse to get to San Francisco, frankly).  However, as ever, the Web 2.0 Expo was inspirational.  Some wonderful speakers, the company of some great companies, and luminary keynotes from Google, Microsoft, O’Reilly – among many others.

Gov 2.0 and Web 2.0 Expo

Tim O'ReillyOne of the best keynote sessions at today’s Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco was the interview of Ellen Miller of the Sunlight Foundation by Tim O’Reilly .

Sunlight Foundation is focusing on making government more transparent through Web 2.0 tools.  The fact is that in the US (never mind the UK) too many government departments spend too much money on web site development that delivers too little in terms of understandable information. 

This means that valuable information that should be in the public debate is hidden.  It’s a kind of web obfuscation caused by bloat and poor user interface design. 

Ellen mentioned that the Sunlight Foundation often produces ‘alternative’ web sites that present government data in much better, more visually understandable ways.  The result is that the alternative sites – often built for peanuts compared to federal budgets – become much more popular that the ‘official sites’.

The Foundation also challenges the vastly inflated costs associated with official sites such as Recovery.gov - that has a massive budget of multiple tens of millions of dollars.  Why such budgets in a Web 2.0 world?

The Sunlight Foundation is a non-profit organisation that is shaking the processes by which governments provide citizens with information.  We need its equivalent in the UK.
